History of The Yucaipa Woman’s Club

Parts from Edith M. Sherer’s “History of the Yucaipa Woman’s Club 1909 – 1956”

We are the Yucaipa Woman’s Club.  Or are we???   According to Edith M. Scherer’s “History of the Yucaipa Woman’s Club, 1909 to 1956”, in 99 years we have had 5 names.

In 1909 the Yucaipa Woman’s Club, with its many opportunities for usefulness in the development of an ideal community life, was but a dream.

In the autumn of 1910, the dreamers gave a reception to honor all who came to live in Yucaipa that year.  It was the first public social gathering on the town site.  It was remembered as “The 1910 Reception.”

In 1911, a simple organization was founded.  Its purpose “to advance the general welfare of the Yucaipa community by inspiring people to stand as a mighty phalanx for all that tends toward the development of the highest type of community life.”

At a meeting in the home of Reverend Floyd Seaman, on Feb.22, 1911, seven ladies served dinner, picnic style, to the men folk who came to plow the minister’s ranch. They proposed that there be more gatherings like this one.  Even if there wasn’t a ranch to plow, the women could meet – maybe as a church group..  And so the Club first met as a Woman’s Group of the Non-Denominational Church.

Plans were made for things they wished to accomplish for the community.  One was to help the new school.  Dinners and community picnics were part of the program. And to start a library.  A choral society of 35 members was formed.

When the community churches established women’s societies, the club decided to discontinue religious programs and devote its time to improving local conditions.

In June, 1912, a Constitution was adopted and the name, “Council of Women,” given to the organization.

In 1917 the organization was incorporated as “The Woman’s Club of Yucaipa” to be known as The Yucaipa Woman’s Club.

So, YES, we are The Yucaipa Woman’s Club, now and forever.
